As the days went on, it became clear that the hot springs weren’t going to be a place where Kara could hang out. She was horrified by how forward Helga acted whenever she had the chance. It was so horrible, Kara thought. There was no way to get that woman to stop. It wasn’t fair. She didn’t understand why this woman seemed determined to take her man away from her.

They were somewhere that Kara would have loved to spend her time in more, but she couldn’t. Helga would just glom on to Ben if they went in there together. If they didn’t, then Helga would spot Kara alone and vanish. It made it hard for Kara to conduct her research. Especially since some of the women wouldn’t talk as freely in Ben’s presence as they did when she was alone with them.

Kara couldn’t figure out quite what that implied.

Either way, she didn’t like what it led to. If only there was some way to make Helga leave them alone. But if Ben couldn’t get her to stop, what chance did Kara have of forcing this horrible woman to see sense and just leave them alone?

Kara didn’t know what to do, and there wasn’t anyone she felt comfortable asking for advice. It was hard because she needed to remain impartial for her research but she also needed to make it through until spring and that wasn’t going to happen with Helga continuing to act this way. There was simply no way that Kara would tolerate it for that long. No one could.

She sighed and turned away from looking at the hot springs. It was really amazing what the bears had managed to carve out over the years. The cave might have seemed cold, but it was mainly carved into the earth.

Kara didn’t think that she needed to fear cave-ins. Especially given how long the structure had been around. There were floors. It had the warmth of earth but there was no earth visible. Everything was covered with mosaics and rugs and tapestries. They were simple and woven, but they were beautiful. Kara loved how every inch of the place was adorned and decorated in some way.

Even though it was simple, it was beautiful. There was a lot of foliage in the area, much more than she would have expected, being that it was underground and the bears didn’t seem like they were trying to make it look like anything other than a cozy cave.

She sighed. There was nothing that she could do except wait for the woman that she was scheduled to interview to show up.

“I’m Sarah Hart,” the heavily pregnant woman said.

“Nice to meet you,” Kara said. She didn’t bother introducing herself. Everyone knew who she was already.

“Is there a reason that you’re going to do it out here?” Sarah Hart asked, looking around. “It’s awfully public.”

“Would you prefer if it took place in private?” Kara asked. No one else had wanted to do a private interview. Kara wasn’t asking invasive questions here.
